‘90 mins with Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo’!
Politics is everywhere on the planet.
Two weeks ago, there was a crucial political meeting in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Ogun State became the first to ‘anoint’ a candidate for governorship through an opaque process described as ‘Consensus’.
Only the few ‘leaders’ that performed the political sifting knew the basis for their choice of candidate. The verdict was read out at the meeting where no one could speak, and ‘it is finished’.
The ‘consensus’ process has left most people bemused with more questions than answers in its wake.
That first announcement brought to a shuddering end the ambition of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo to contest for, and possibly become, the first female governor in Nigeria’s history at the 2027 election.
Her dream was prematurely aborted on the altar of consensus, a process that has left both sweet and sour tastes in the mouths of people, depending on what side of the divide one belongs.
Since then, around the country and the political parties, the reactions to ‘consensus’ have been mostly negative, with subtle threats of resistance amidst agitation for a more democratic, transparent and merit-based process involving more than a few ‘special’ people.
What does Senator Iyabo Obasanjo feel about her experience?
Despite the shock she suffered she played the perfect sportsman. She was magnanimous: taking the uncommon and honourable path of accepting the ‘verdict’ of the ‘leaders’, congratulating the chosen candidate, suspending her campaign and pledging loyalty to both the APC and to President Bolà Ahmed Tinubu.
It was a brutal end to what had promised to be a very intriguing political game in Ogun State, and a closure to her ambition.
How have her followers taken it since then? Was the experience worth her return to politics? Is this the end of her romance with politics? What next in her journey? What does she think about the unfolding drama for the political offices in Ogun State ahead of the elections? How did her father, most respected African political leader, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, take how she was ‘ambushed’? What would she now do with the groundswell of unprecedented support that she received from Ogun State citizens?
These are questions begging for answers that I shall put to Iyabo Obasanjo when she joins me this Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 7:30 am for ‘90 mins with Mathematical’ on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7FM.

Muda Lawal of Nigeria opened scoring and closed the scorers’ chart of the 1980 African Cup of Nations, scoring the first of tournament’s 33 goals against Tanzania and scoring the last goal in the final match against Algeria.
Big Shegs, thanks for these wonderful videos.
Very interesting memories. We were fanatical about the Green Eagles as they were then called. Henry Nwosu had just broken into the team. We were extremely jealous of him because he belonged to the other school. We also were jealous of Adokie because he was from another other school, but nonetheless we were proud of them because they represented the best of Lagos schools who graduated into the national team. Can’t wait to see more videos?
Great guys Adokiye was superb on d left , Segun terrific on on d right…d Eagles of today must learn from dis clips and start to play like true Eagles
Great stuff. Thanks sharing this piece history with us your aburos Big Sheg. Always the Mathematical 7!
Just look at those short pants showing the physics of the sportsmen.
